Monkeys on a Treadmill

For a study on the effect of exercise on the brain, one of the NIH’s National Institute of Aging laboratories forced monkeys to run on treadmills for a quarter-mile a day, 5 days a week for 4 months. When not being experimented on, the bored monkeys were each locked by themselves in tiny cages and given “occasional TV viewing” in an attempt to stimulate them. For the same project, mice were also made to run in exercise wheels and then killed and dissected. The kicker? The same study was being concurrently conducted with human volunteers!
