Hang on tight, because we’ve got some exciting news.
For years, we’ve worked with Congress to expose stupid spending by the National Science Foundation (NSF), including:
- Over $400,000 to study frog mating calls
- $76,000 to blow lizards with leaf-blowers
- $1.3M to study how dogs drink water
- $1.5M to put lizards on treadmills
- $900,000 to put living and dead turtles on treadmills
- $1.5M to put fish on treadmills
And who could forget the infamous NSF-funded shrimp on a treadmill?
Are you seeing a pattern here? Us too, and it’s WASTE.
Now, a new bipartisan bill is cracking down on wasteful spending at the NSF and other agencies. The U. S. Innovation and Competition Act (FKA the Endless Frontier Act) includes several WCW-backed measures to improve transparency and accountability about how the government spends your money.

The bill includes an amendment from Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) that requires an annual report on NSF-funded animal experiments and other research in foreign countries. Sen. Ernst and Rand Paul (R-KY) also successfully added language to the bill that requires all federal agencies to create online libraries with public access to the results of taxpayer-funded research within a year of publication.
The bill also integrates important language from another pending bill calling for a report on COVID’s origins, including a detailed review of the evidence for a potential leak from the Wuhan Animal Lab.

In addition to the above items already included in the bill draft, Sen. Ernst and colleagues have introduced these measures:
- Sen. Ernst and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) proposed a bipartisan amendment that would apply the COST Act to the NSF, requiring that all grant recipients put a public price tag in press releases that discloses exactly how much of your money they spent.
- Sens. Ernst, Roger Marshall (R-KS) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) proposed an amendment to defund the Wuhan Animal Lab
- Sen. Ernst proposed an amendment to prohibit taxpayer dollars from being spent at cruel and dirty wet markets worldwide that sell wild and domestic animals, are unregulated and spread disease.
Taxpayers have the right to know who’s paying the bills… and who’s cashing the checks.
